Bergenia

The rush is on to get as much as possible done in the garden before the rain comes - it was initially forecast for today but so far has just been overcast, gloomy and cold here. This handsome plant - sometimes called 'elephants' ears' - provides all year interest and always flowers at this time. Quoting Garden Plants for Scotland: "they provide useful colour when the rest of the garden is just waking up" - quite so!
