Gun Violence

40,000 white flowers make up the activist art installation that serves as a tribute to the many lives that have been lost, just last year, to gun violence, a testament to the strength and courage of survivors, and a plea to our elected officials to pass universal background checks and other lifesaving gun safety legislation in the Senate. It was sponsored by the Giffords Foundation: Gabby Giffords is a former representative who was shot in the head by a deranged man and has since resigned her commission.

The installation was up for a few days on the National Mall in Washington DC, on the lawn right in front of the Capitol, where our elected decision makers spent their time doing nothing (this is particularly the case for Republicans).

The installation was surrounded by individual signs showing the number of deaths by guns for each State. Not surprisingly, those States that are 'red' (aka Republican) had the highest numbers -- by far. (see extra for Florida's)
