University Charter

Very lucky to be in Special Collections again today. This time I saw some amazing examples of collections prepared for a VIP visit. Here is a detail from the University Charter, dated 1582.

The effective starting point of the University, this charter was granted by the then 15 year old King James VI.

It confirmed the gift of ecclesiastical revenue made in 1567 by his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots, authorising the Town Council to spend the income on a college teaching arts, theology, medicine, law and any of the other liberal arts.
