Volcanic

These are just a few of the Glasshouse Mountains, about an hour’s drive north of Brisbane. The ‘mountains’, the highest is Mt Beerwah to the right of the photo at 550 metres, are the eroded remains of volcanoes that erupted about 25 million years ago. The name Glasshouse Mountains was given by Captain James Cook on 17 May 1770, when his ship Endeavour sailed by. It is said that the peaks reminded Cook of the glass furnaces of his home county of Yorkshire.
