Parkhouse and Chrome Hill

Of all the days to forget my memory card for my camera!! Still at least we had our smart phones, so the day was saved for a blip.

We parked in Earl Sterndale and headed for Chrome Hill. It's a popular hill to climb, very steep, but worth the views. It's a popular scene for photographers too. If you search for it on the internet you will probably get the same image. But I was trying to get a different view today. Parkhouse is in the centre with Chrome Hill peeping up to the right of it.

It's also a magnet for drone fliers! We've only been here twice in the last year and each time we encountered a drone. Sorry, but I'm not happy about that. Firstly, I don't come to the countryside to listen to that whirring sound and secondly I don't wished to be filmed either. Anyway, once they'd done a couple of circuits I think they must have got bored and left.

We then walked via the village of Hollinsclough to get a magnificent side view of both the ridge of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. We then returned along the side of Parkhouse back to Earl Sterndale. It was a figure of eight walk of around 10 miles. It was a bit fresh to start but soon warmed up to remove an outer layer of clothing. And was gloriously sunny for much of the time. Even though it's a popular spot and it was the school holidays, it was really quiet.

We would normally finish our walk with a drink in The Quiet Woman pub in Earl Sterndale, but sadly since the pandemic it was closed last July and is not set to open anytime soon. It was a real gem as it was not pretentious in any way and hadn't changed for years. My other half always liked the fact that there was always a pork pie on offer and not much else. It had real character, including the landlord, and was from another era. In fact the landlord never seemed to understand why anyone would want to walk up the nearby hills. He 'd lived here all his life and never done so. I wonder what happened to him?

Let's hope if anyone takes over the running of the place that they don't turn it into some gastropub, and just keep it as a nice place to enjoy a pint after a walk.
