The Orangery

A lovely 5 mile walk at Gibside today.  It's a National Trust property close to where I live.  Pictured is the ruins of the orangery which was built for Mary Eleanor Bowes who was a keen botanist.

Mary Eleanor was the daughter and heiress of Sir George Bowes, a wealthy business man.  He died when Mary was 11 years old.  A stipulation of his will was that her future husband should take the name Bowes.  She married 9th Earl of Strathmore, John Lyon when she was 18.  The couples children used the name Bowes-Lyon.  Mary Eleanor was the great great great grandmother of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother.

I have attached a few extras from our time at Gibside including a photo of the chapel.
