Mao is a figure who can draw sharply contrasting opinions varying from those who just the millions who still love him and I'd recommend you watch Dr. Nial Ferguson's C4 documentary China - Triumph and Turmoil to gain more of an insight into the culture of Mao Zedong.

Contrast this with many other Chinese who'll flat out say"I hate that man"! For example, I have a Chinese friend who was in Tiananmen Square demonstration and when I brought up Mao he simply said "please never mention this man's name to me again".
