Drain Guard

Interesting drain guard in a local street - "E.S.E  PHOENIX  LEWES"

The Phoenix Iron works in Lewes date back to 1835. But, as the name suggests, it had to keep on rising from the ashes (I guess foundry work is inherently dangerous) first in 1844 and then just over a 100 years later in 1948. The "E.S.E" relates to the 1951 new owners "East Sussex Engineering" they stopped heavy foundry works in the mid-1970s to focus on specialist non-ferrous metal casting until 1986. The cost of running a foundry in close proximity to residential housing proved too much.

However, around Sussex, their name lives on , just under our feet.
