Today's Post

I was surprised this post box is still in use. It is located on a rough track leading only to a few houses, some of which are fairly recent. It dates from the reign of King George V, which dates it as somewhere near to 100 years old. I think it is what is known as a lamp box. The  name derives from the fact that they were designed to be affixed to lamp posts, although they are sometimes found embedded in walls or mounted on poles. This one has been encased in a brick pillar. The brickwork at the top reminded me a bit of the Japanese rising sun flag. Today, the rising sun flag is considered offensive by many people because of it's association with  aspects of Japan's military history.
