There are many interesting Ancient and Veteran trees nearby, a few of which are in Newbattle Abbey grounds.  The picture shows two Veteran Sweet Chestnuts which were planted in the 18th century. They both have very  bulging trunks with several holes and cavities and a crow which is just visible was obviously nesting in one of them.  According to the Woodland Trust  Ancient Tree Inventory the one with the bird’s nest was recorded as being 6.93 metres in girth.  The other has a large bulge at the base which was large enough for a family to sit on for a picnic earlier and was measured at 7.43 m at a height of 1.5 m from the ground.   Unfortunately the Sweet chestnuts seldom grow sufficiently large enough to use in Scotland
