'Spit' on a Stick

I accompanied M to the Langham Dome Museum this morning as he was one of the volunteers helping to re-install the replica Spitfire to its purpose-built pedestal after over-wintering indoors.

The Langham Dome is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, one of only a handful of anti-aircraft gunnery domes left in the UK.  It was built in 1942-1943 next to RAF Langham.  Moving images of enemy aircraft were projected onto the inside of the dome to enable trainees to identify the planes and learn how to shoot them down.  The dome has been restored thanks to grants by the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage and is now a fascinating museum telling its story along with the history of RAF Langham, whose airfield is alongside.

The extras show the spitfire being hoisted up by the crane, whose operator carried out the process with impressive precision and control.

The Spitfire will now be an eye-catching emblem for the museum throughout the summer months.
