"The bravest little street in England"

This plaque is at the end of the original Chapel Street in Altrincham (long since demolished and redeveloped). The wording on the metal plaque reads, "In memory of the 161 men of Chapel Street who volunteered and served in the Great War 1914-1918. 29 gave their lives. We will remember them." The blue plaque notes that these 161 men came from just 60 houses.

King George V recognised their sacrifice and paid tribute to the residents in a personal telegram. He acknowledged Chapel Street as ‘the bravest little street in England’.
