New Zealand Shoveler....

Scientific name: Anas rhynchotis variegate
Common name: New Zealand Shoveler
Maori name: Kuruwhengi

I remember the first time I saw a NZ Shoveler not long after I started blipping, I thought it was the most colourful duck I'd ever seen and marveled over the shape of it's beck. I took many shots on a dull overcast day, the shots were not good but I didn't care, I was way to excited! Today's shot in bright sunlight not only captures the vibrant colours but also reflection, the female is rather dull compared this male.

Saturday.....a day to remember 'the first' and to recapture on a better day. Lovely bright sunny day after a heavy frost, enjoyed an amble around the lakes.
