"When the Green Woods Laugh"

Whenever I see fresh green leaves on the trees at this time of year, I'm always reminded about the book "When the Green Woods Laugh" by
H. E. Bates in his series about the Larkin family.  Bates was inspired by William Blake's poem "Laughing Song", the first verse of which is as follows:

When the green woods laugh with the voice of joy,
And the dimpling stream runs laughing by;
When the air does laugh with our merry wit,
And the green hill laughs with the noise of it;

The trees in Sherborne on our walk this morning seemed to be laughing with the joy of spring.  Not so this afternoon when it has turned grey and has got really cold again!
