Once a phonetician...

As I wandered into town at lunchtime, my eyes were caught by the writing on the back of this hoodie (that's hoodie Uni-style, not hoodie chav style!). With a knowing smile to myself, I processed it straight away. But how many other people on Northumberland Street recognised the writing as the International Phonetic Alphabet, I wondered? And if they did, how many thought that the two close front unrounded /i/ vowels really ought to have long vowel length markers, tut tut! Oh dear, perhaps I really ought to return to and finish that PhD...
