The Woodland Garden (Thursday 6th May 2021)

This copper beech tree is the latest to come into leaf in the Woodland Garden. Aquilegia buds are starting to appear. Rather poor light on this day and I was displeased with most of my pictures - probably my fault for not adjusting settings sufficiently.

Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Martha and the Vandellas - I'll Have To Let Him Go (recorded 1st August 1962, Hitsville Studio A, Detroit MI)
I have had to slow down on the trawl through my Motown collection because of other priorities but on this day I did play through Complete Motown Singles Vol. 2: 1962 (Disc 3) which includes the label recording debut of Martha and the Vandellas, still a quintet at that time, with I'll Have To Let Him Go. The backing track had been prepared for  Mary Wells but to meet union requirements the singer had to be present in the studio at time of recording. She wasn't and the union rep had turned up, so local singer Martha Reeves, who was working there as a secretary, was hastily recruited to supply a demo lead vocal, with the help of her group. They sounded so good belting out the tune that it became their debut single and Martha Reeves became an official Motown artist. This is the original mono version as a different take with a slightly changed lyric was used for the  stereo version of the album Come And Get These Memories (sent out to DJs only) and the stereo Greatest Hits album released later in 1965.
