How sweet! / Wie süß!

The research scientist Friedrich Löffler initially experimented in a stable in the middle of Greifswald, but had to relocate to the nearby Baltic island of Riems after complaints about “bad smells".

It was here he founded the world's first virological institute just over 100 years ago, which went on to pioneer research into diphtheria and foot and mouth disease.

According to the institute, Löffler was for virology what his colleague Koch was for bacteriology - though ironically it’s the Robert Koch Institute which became famous with the coronavirus.

According to the January 2008 edition of Disinfacts magazine (and they should know), in addition to Löffler‘s extreme modesty and restraint, he surprised colleagues and employees with an almost childlike enthusiasm: when developing a new dyeing method, he presented his sample preparations with the words “Zucker, Zucker, Meine Herren!” ("Sugar, sugar, gentlemen!") - I think in the sense of ‘How sweet!‘.
