Prom Fashions

Even when I was in High School, Senior Prom was a big deal involving the perfect dress, the right date and a great venue. I went to mine with OilMan. We double dated with one of my best friends and her date, one of OilMan's best friends. My friend's very cool parents made dinner for us (and might even have given us each a glass of wine) before we set off for the dance at a hotel, whose name I've long since forgotten, in Los Angeles.

By the time our kids were in High School, the big worry was drinking and driving. Many kids got together in groups and rented a limo so they didn't have to drive. Matt claims that their chauffeur was unfamiliar with the narrow San Francisco streets and one way alleys and that he wound up driving.(He always was a good storyteller...) Although the kids were amazingly accomplished and multitalented, dressing up was not something they did much. One of Tim's friends made her dress--a tiny strapless scrap of bright yellow. It looked great on her, but she was not at ease with it--alternately tugging it north and south.

Today I went to a fund raiser for Maria Carillo High School's grad night., a runway show of Prom fashions. The parents plan an entire night of dining, dancing and entertainment for the graduates, which all takes place at the high school. I'm sure the peace of mind knowing that the kids are having a great time without being out on the highways makes the incredible amount of work well worth it for the parents.) Will is a freshman this year and my friend Cindy's daughter, is a senior and was one of the models. They were great--playful, sophisticated and confident. The girls were wearing taller shoes than I ever could manage, and the boys are catching up to them both in height and self confidence.

OilMan, who would rather throw himself under a bus than go to such an event, stayed home and built himself a workbench....
