Eden Soccer Club

The name of the local soccer club here in Eden is the Killer Whales. The main shows part of the side of the club house. Plenty of angles in the soccer ball alone.

The whaling industry in Eden operated from around 1830 to 1930. The killer whales of Eden were a group of orcas which cooperated with the baleen whale hunters. A pod of orcas, including the distinctive Old Tom, would find a target whale and shepherd it into a bay where a group of orcas remained sentinel. Old Tom would swim to the whaling station and alert the whalers, by breaching and thrashing his tail, that they had a whale in the bay. The whalers would row out to meet him and off they went for the kill. The orcas' reward was getting to feed on the lips and tongue (yum) of the harpooned whale.

Old Tom died in 1930, aged probably 35. The skeleton of this 6.7m, 6 ton hero is on display in Eden's Killer Whale Museum.

The extra shows the all-weather soccer match viewing area of the sports ground.

Thanks for hosting BobsBlips. Stay well all.
