Abandoned?

We had been out with Miss Flum and found this baby blackbird on her doorstep when we returned. The weather was awful - cold, wet and windy - and the poor thing was just sitting there, with no shelter.  How did it get there, and what to do? Trouble was, that's the only entrance to the house and it was in the way.

We assumed that it was from the nest in the tree in her front garden, where the adults were still feeding at the nest so we sat in the car and watched for several minutes to see if they would feed this one, to reassure ourselves that they knew where it was.

But nothing happened - it just sat, looking miserable, opening its beak now and then so, although the best advice would be to leave it where it was, we decided, if possible, to move it to shelter beneath its home tree, a couple of metres away, where its parents could see it. I volunteered and approached carefully, speaking gently and was on the point of lifting it when it fluttered forward off the step and down under the jasmine.

It was more sheltered there, safer from predators, maybe even had something to eat, yet we wondered whether its parents could find it.

I do feel I have a jinx on wildlife at the moment.
