Today we met Bonny and a Big Wombat!

It’s been another fantastic day on the trek east and the highlight was meeting Bonny from the Tjilkabo Community near Bookabie.  We had heard about a Big Wombat we had missed on the way to the west.  This time round I rang first and was advised by Bonny that the Community had been closed to the public for over 12 months because of COVID.  However, Bonny welcomed us to call by and take a photo of their beautiful wombat.  In fact Bonny was happy to take a photo of the two walking wombats for us.  It was a very interesting encounter and sobering at the same time.  The community could not rely on the income from their lovely cafe and surrounds and there is still no sign of it opening up at this stage.  The community is on Wirangu land.  Wirangu is an endangered language and two fluent speakers of Wirangu, elders Doreen and Gladys Miller have been working with Adelaide University to produce language learning resources.  The community also conducts Language revitalisation camps and cultural tours for local students.
