St George’s Well

On the path between Stockbridge and Dean Village is the famous St Bernard’s Well much admired by tourists and locals. A little further along towards Dean Village there is another well which tends to go unnoticed. This is St George’s Well which was built in 1810 by a Mr MacDonald of Stockbridge who named it in honour of George III on his jubilee year. It was called the “Inky Well” because of the taste of the water.  The owner hoped to emulate the popularity of St Bernard’s Well, but this never happened and the well fell into disuse.
