What are those weird guys on the roof doing?

It all started in 1810 when a gentlemen's club opened a new theater hall in the building. This was a gift for the inhabitants of Enschede. For years, performances were given by artists in this hall. Later a large hall was added and it was called the Twentsche Schouwburg.
The building was a cinema for a few years in the 1980s, but this quickly turned back into a theater in 1983. The inside of the building was renovated and the municipality of Enschede wanted to show this on the outside. That is why they asked artist Jawik Krudde to design something for them that would make the Twentsche Schouwburg more beautiful.
Jawik only had a few weeks to make the images. It had to be finished before the festive opening. He worked long hours to make all 25 images. They are made of mannequins that you could put in different positions. The dolls are covered with clay and wet newspapers and then a thick polyester layer was applied. Finally, Jawik painted them with sea blue and copper green paint.
The dolls wear theater clothes from ancient Italy, such as harlequins and clowns. This is a reference to the function of the theater. The statues are also in an unusual position. That's why they look strange. At night they are lit with lamps that make them stand out and during the day you only see the silhouettes.
