Statement from the Heart

It’s four years since the Uluru Statement from the Heart was presented to the Australian people. After years of consultation it offered two proposals for a way forward, a First Nations People’s Voice to Parliament enshrined in the Constitution and a Makarrata process of treaty and truth telling. The Government’s first, spontaneous response was simple. They said ‘No’.

The Government has still not acted on the Statement, but work is continuing. Today it was announced that the Sydney Peace Prize has been awarded to the Uluru Statement.

These are some words from the Statement:

We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country. When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country…
In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.”
