May tree

Until recently I had thought the expression "N'ere cast a clout till May is out" referred to keeping wrapped up until the end of the month of May.
However, I gather it more likely refers to the hawthorn or "May" tree coming into blossom, which is usually well before the end of May as this photo shows - and this year the flowering was probably somewhat later than usual due to the cold weather all through April.
