#7 NICKEL

The word of the day for the Dictionary Project is -

nickel
noun -
1. a hard, silvery-white, ductile and malleable metallic element.
2. a cupronickel coin of the U.S., a 20th part of a dollar, equal to five cents.

Nickel occurs naturally in various minerals.
The earth's core is believed to consist
largely of metallic iron and nickel.
The chief use of nickel is in alloys,
with iron, to which it imparts strength
and resistance to corrosion, and copper for coins.

The nickel's design since 1938 has featured
a profile of President Thomas Jefferson.
Prior to introduction of the nickel, five-cent pieces
were very small silver coins called half dimes.
Canada has their own version of the nickel as well.

This photograph was taken with a nickel
stuck (taped) to the side of my truck.
Both the truck and the nickel were kind
enough to reflect a very gorgeous sunset.
