Preston Tower, Prestonpans

Preston Tower is a ruined L plan keep dating back to the 14th century  and belonged to the Hamilton family through marriage.  It was attacked and burnt by the Earl of Hertford in 1544 during the Rough Wooing and by Oliver Cromwell's forces in 1650.  After being restored it burnt again in 1663 although this time accidently at which point it was abandoned.  Sir Walter Scott is known to have played there as a child when he briefly lived in the town with his aunt and JMW Turner sketched it on a trip to the area in 1834.  The National Trust purchased the Tower in 1969 and it is under the guardianship of East Lothian Council.  The Council supported by the Scottish Government's Town Centre Fund and National Lottery funding recently announced that £900,000 will be invested in restoring the Tower and nearby doocot.  

Every June the fantastic laburnum arch in the foreground steals the show.
