Moor Space

At mid day the large car park at Pork Hill on Dartmoor was almost full. On the open moor though, a mile from the road there was plenty of open space. The Dartmoor ponies are attracted to this pool to drink, or just stand in the water when the weather is very warm. Although it looks natural it is what is known as a dew pond. There are several of these on the higher parts of Dartmoor. They usually occupy a hollow lined with clay, and were created to provide water for the animals that graze here during the Summer months.
