“Full many a flower….”

During my evening walk around the garden this evening I spotted this red poppy half buried in green foliage and I thought of this poem:

“Full many a gem of purest ray serene
The dark, unfathomed caves of ocean bear;
Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.”

Thomas Gray (1716-1771) English poet
“Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”

I hear there is a growing trend in gardening circles to allow gardens to become more environmentally friendly i.e. let nature take its course to support wildlife. Well, that certainly applies to ours.
