Apricot Rose

A Rose

A sepal, petal, and a thorn
Upon a common summer's morn,
A flash of dew, a bee or two,
A breeze
A caper in the trees, —
And I'm a rose!

~ Emily Dickinson

Portland is known as The City of Roses. The first rose was planted here in 1837, a dozen years before Oregon became a state. In 1889, the Portland Rose Society was created. And for the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition, 10,000 roses were planted along Portland streets.

During WWI, English hybridists needed a safe place for their roses due to war-time bombing. Portland's recently created International Rose Test
 Garden provided that haven.

This capture was taken on a walk in the neighborhood. June is a prime time to take in the beauty and fragrance of roses in the Willamette Valley.
