An Unplanned Walk

A beautiful sunny morning, but the shower wasn't very warm. Apparently it was a controller malfunction (P understands such things) so we went into Diss to collect a new one - & took the opportunity to go for a walk from the park by the Mere to Fair Green & Roydon Fen. There are some lovely old houses around Fair Green & I was particularly taken by the chimney with six octagonal flues on the pink house (no.36) on the corner. These particular houses seem to be early 17th century & were derelict in the 1960's & early 1970's. The council wanted them demolished, but, after an appearance in a programme by Sir John Betjeman, they were saved & renovated. I've just watched clips of the programmes on YouTube, but still can't find out why a worker's cottage would have such a grand chimney!

Roydon Fen made a pleasant contrast - the extras show one of the ragged robins in the reed bed & the boardwalk in the alder carr.
