Vacation # day 27# On the way on the Afsluitdijk

We are driving here on the Afsluitdijk, towards Noordholland. Right from us ride our friends.
You can just see a little bit of their white caravan.
To the left of the photo you can see the IJsselmeer.

Afsluitdijk means "closing dam"

The Afsluitdijk is the dam between North Holland and Friesland, which closes off the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea. This is where the dam gets its name. The Afsluitdijk is important to protect the Netherlands against flooding. The Afsluitdijk is part of the Zuiderzee Works. Construction began in 1927
The construction took 5 years and was opened in September 1932.
The Afsluitdijk is 32 km long.
