Wanderings & Witterings

Narrow

I live in the narrowest part of Scotland, i.e. where the distance between east and west coasts is the shortest. No surprise, then, to realise that the main arteries between east and west are fairly close to where I live - roads and railways, and also the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Before them, the Romans decided this would be a good place in which to build a defensive wall, and following on from the construction of Hadrian's Wall to the south, the emperor Antonius Pius had a wall built around 142AD to separate the cultured folk in Hamilton and Motherwell, Airdrie and Cumbernauld from the barbarians in Kilsyth and Bonnybridge (or something like that!)

One of the better remaining sites of the Antonine Wall, which was occupied for only about 25 years, is a 20-25 minute walk from where I live and was the location for my walk on Wednesday.

At the time of writing and posting (Thursday afternoon) I am six Zoom calls down for the week and only one more to go, although it might be a long and fractious one, we'll see.

Yippee! Light at the end of the tunnel. Tomorrow might be a day when my computer remains switched off.
