Gothic Revival

Opposite the main campus of the University of the West of Scotland stands the Thomas Coats Memorial Baptist Church. Sometimes called the Baptist Cathedral of Europe it was built between 1884 and 1894 as a memorial to Thomas Coats who was one of the founders of the important thread company-
J and P Coats.

It was designed by Hippolyte Blanc in the fashionable Gothic style which is much more ornate than most Baptist Churches, hence the Cathedral tag.

It continues as a working church but it is also a popular venue for concerts and is much used by the local university for graduation ceremonies and other functions.
