‘A Roman Bathhouse’

I must have been to the main public car park at Cramond hundreds of times for Saturday morning parkruns along the prom, but it was only today but I discovered that it’s construction, in the mid 1970s, led to the discovery of the largest Roman Bathhouse in Scotland.

There’s not much to see today, as today’s blip shows. Following its excavation in the late 1970s, the site was, frustratingly, back-filled and covered up, and is now totally overgrown.

Apparently until funds are found to have it safely on show.

Scotland was at the outer fringes of the Roman Empire, and they were really only settled here for around 30-40 years. It was never conquered.

The extra photo gives the details on a sign near the entrance to the car park.
