Hawks, Falcons, Battlefields and Castles

Today’s a travel day as we move from Pitlochry to north of Wick. But of course, this doesn’t mean we just pass by the wonders that are on offer!

First, it’s Culloden - more G’s choice than mine. Of course, battlefields are spiritual in their way, remembering the bravery and courage of young lives mown down, often in their prime. And they are also harsh reminders of man’s inhumanity; the arrogance - and evil - of nations or leaders who feel they have the right to crush the will of others. Now  Culloden is, in fact, achingly beautiful - a meadow of skylark song and flowers, a peaceful juxtaposition of the agonies once felt there.

Then it’s on past Inverness, through stunning scenery, to Dunrobin Castle, grandly elevated above the sea with flowered terraces cascading down.  We watch a falconry display - I’m hoping to improve my in-flight shots. The static shots are fine, but catching a peregrine in full flight mode is close to impossible. We explore the castle, once home to the notorious Duke of Sutherland, and see the bed especially made for Queen Victoria. Just how many Scottish castles did she stay in?

Finally it’s further north through more spectacular  scenery - hills coloured egg yolk yellow by a profusion of gorse - until we reach the edge of mainland Britain and we can look across to Orkney. We have two nights here in a wonderful B&B where we can order our evening meals which  Kasey cooks and delivers  to our room - we’re well away from other hostelries!

We’ve just come in from a walk. It is gloriously peaceful but for the watery sound of curlews and the bleating of sheep. It’s truly magical.

So it’s a very late blip, I’m afraid - and once again so hard to choose  my main. In the end it’s the Harris Hawk that wins - with Culloden, Dunrobin and Peregrine in extras. I’ll try to catch up tomorrow - but please forgive me if  I don’t manage much in the way of comments!
