Werris Creek

The small town of Werris Creek used to be a major rail hub with the third biggest railway station in NSW.

The town is now much quieter and the station houses a magnificent railway museum.
But the best find was Peter, one the volunteers (extras). He was running the extensive model railway by a computer when we arrived. It turns out he started working for the railways before he was old enough to go on the trains. He worked his way up as fireman and driver first on steam trains and then diesels until he was finally the area manager for northern NSW. He was a wealth of information and so interesting to talk to.

We continued on via Gunnedah where we saw the silo art (3rd extra) commemorating Dorothea MacKellar, author of the iconic poem “I Love a Sunburnt Country”.

Now we are in Narrabri for three nights at a cosy BnB just out of town.
