Glen Tromie

A glorious day for what has become an annual highlight of the summer - a walk through the moorland and woods of Glen Tromie. The heathland at the start of the walk has spectacular banks of rock roses, patches of thyme and speedwell and one clump of bell heather already in flower. In a very damp section of track beneath the alders and birches which dominate the woodland we found fragrant bog myrtle, a group of spotted heath orchids ( See extra) and the beautiful but frail purple flowers of the carnivorous Common Butterwort.

We were fortunate to see two families of wrens, pipits and willow warblers.

The sunshine and warmth brought out the butterflies - small heaths, skippers, a red admiral and wood whites. Down by the river there was a painful abundance of small biting insects.
