Butterfly Orchid

On a very cool and grey Summer Solstice, I had a quick walk in a local woodland, where the star of the show was a couple of beautiful spikes of Butterfly Orchid, stimulated into flower by recent work to open up rides and glades. They were growing next to a fine group of Common Spotted-orchid. I last saw them at this site eleven years ago!

I was soaked by an unexpected shower on my way back to the car, but there was just time to take a few shots of flowering Common Valerian and Hogweed, which were proving attractive to bumblebees, all of which were clearly cold and therefore reluctant to fly away.
