Letting Sleeping Cats Lie Part 2
Rani this time. Asleep on the sofa.
Frustrating work day. No details - too technical and dull.
However I did discover a very trivial bit of trivia.
In Scotland there are LOTS of words for describing being drunk. Way too many to list. One of the most Scottish is "steaming".
Where does that come from?
Well.
It was a traditional Glasgow/Paisley/Greenock thing to holiday in Rothesay on the Isle Of Bute in the Firth Of Clyde. Or even to make a day trip to Rothesay (recommended).
Alcohol sales were banned on Sundays (at that time)- except on the paddle steamers that delivered passengers to Rothesay. And Scots took advantage, and would drink as much as possible on the boat and get to Rothesay "steaming drunk".
I'm just absolutely delighted to have found that out after having used the word for years and never having thought about it.
