Dribs and Drabs of 2014

By RodgerEvans01

A forest beneath your feet...

The Conservatory in the KC Irving Centre greenhouses is starting to come alive with the increase in daylight. Things are finally starting to pop above the soil.

Be warned, I will likely blip-bore you to tears with all things Botanical as the seasons progress...

The plant life that really caught my eye was a "stand" of moss gametophytes (leafy base of each plant) on a "decorative" rock in the centre of the conservatory. The gametes have done their duties and the plants are now producing sporophytes (long stalks that end in a club-shaped organ) from which spores will be dispersed to start the cycle all over.

So, those in the land of seemingly never-ending snow, as well as others where spring has already sprung, keep your eyes focused on the ground as well as in the trees. You never know what you might find when out for a blip-fest...

* Likely best viewed enlarged!! The little details of the spore capsules are very cool!
