Ex-caterpillar of Polyphemus Moth

I'm afraid this is an ex-caterpillar. The caterpillar is no more. It was in the road when we were walking this morning. We found it not long after we were passed by a car. The moth it would have become is the polyphemus moth - a very fine - and large! - moth. On the theory that we could be wrong, and it could be only mostly dead, we moved it off the road to a safer place. It very likely subsequently became some nestling's dinner! Which would be better than just being squashed on the road, I suppose.
