Sleeping on the job

Well not sleeping, but lying in an old drainage ditch.

The problem with archaeological watching briefs is that you have to be on site when the contractor decides to dig. As has happened numerous times on this job, the plan on 17:30 the day before has changed by the time 07:30 on the day arrives and you are stuck kicking your heels until they decide to dig. When you are on a large site and the site hut or your car is half an hour away, you just have to hang about. When its cold, raining and/or snowing, this isn't much fun.

This is today's den. LH is lying in an old ditch kind of sheltered from the rain by the tree cover watching for the machine to track past and start digging again. Archaeology isn't all Richard III or knights graves in Edinburgh car parks.

This picture probably explain the stinking cold....
