Monster hoverfly

Rename, thanks to Draco. This is a Dark giant horsefly! 
This morning we saw this hoverfly warming up on the handrail leading down from the caravan. It was massive, about an inch long! I have not cropped it so you can see how big it is on the handrail. At first we thought it was a hornet but I think it is a hoverfly now. I have put another view as an extra. I took it with my zoom lens not my macro as I thought I wouldn't need it in the Lake district....
We're home now for a couple of days then will go back again. The journey is only 2 hours so it's worth coming back to water the garden and harvest the fruit and veggies!
