Font figures

Visiting London for a few days. The Thomas Becket exhibition at the British Museum was full of interesting things including this font from Sweden (see extra for more details). The images at the top of the font feature parts of the story of Becket's execution but I was more taken by the expressive carvings below. What is that man doing?
