Memories

Anyone recognise this archway ?

I was brought up in a house not 300 yards from here.

I drove past my family home, the village church, the haunted bridge, and lots of other places engraved sweetly on my memory.

Any ideas yet ?

It’s the archway which was built in 1832, for the visit to Alton Towers of the then Princess Victoria. With her mother they visited both Shugborough and the Earl and Countess of Shrewsbury at Alton Towers.

For most of my childhood, the left hand lodge was home to two charming elderly ladies. It’s still there, but simply architecturally correct.

The trees are all higher. They’ve remodelled the roads.

But it’s still there in my memories.
