Roped In

This coil of rope is almost as tall as me! Today it felt such a privilege to be inside the 400 year old*, 1/4 mile long Ropery at Chatham Dockyard after 18 months since supervising my last film shoot on the historic site.

The familiar aroma of hemp filled the air, the wooden floorboards creaked and the birds rustled in the eaves of the historic building. I look forward to seeing the ropemakers running the machines in coming weeks.

The Ropery is closed at weekends so it was eerily quiet inside today, just me and the ghosts and the distant sound of the props department taking away set from outside.

*The Ropery first began production in 1618 and it still makes natural and synthetic rope today. More info with the fascinating history here.
