Broken...

…………………………in Half

This is half a Sand Dollar, a sea urchin belonging to the order Clypeasteroida, which I found washed up on a sandy beach near Nelson, NZ.

The live animal is found partially buried in sand in estuaries and on sandy beaches. When the animals die their disc-like shells are often found on beaches.

The extra photo gives a glimpse of the structure inside the shell.

Thank you for the comments, stars and hearts for yesterday’s ‘painterly’ blip. The app has been wonderful while my activities are limited at present. Today I got to see the wounds for the first time. They seem to be healing well.
