River of Flowers

Saturday: Happy Caterpillars ...

... munching away on leaves of Jersey Walkingstick Kale.
Many years ago I would have stopped the eggs growing but there are so few butterflies of any type that I leave Cabbage White caterpillars grow to maturity, the kale is perennial and recovers quickly when the weather gets colder - the plant is about 5yrs old and feeds us during winter and spring.
Sitting in the garden after lunch I suddenly realised there was something missing, not a single bee of any description, no busy buzzing, no movement in the flowers. I walked around for a while - everywhere silent, no buzzing. One last place occurred to me, the cotoneaster ... there were wasps, hover flies and bumble bees, thank goodness!
The lack of bees on a sunny day is so unnatural ... we MUST cherish our friendly pollinators, their absence would be unthinkable :-((
Happy weekend everyone x
Stay safe & healthy & happy everyone :-)
Nos da pawb / goodnight all xx
