Wenchi Crater

We took a weekend trip to Negash Lodge and Wenchi Crater. It was a lot of fun. The lodge was worth visiting, but more about that in another blip.
My brother-in-law and his family were visiting.

The crater was created only about 1000 years ago. It's volcanic. Being part of the Rift Valley, there is still a lot a volcanic activity in these parts. In fact, you can see molten magma in the Danakil area, but you have to be comfortable with the small possibility of being kidnapped and killed by bandits, something that doesn't really excite me.

Anyway, the bus dropped us at the crater rim, and we hiked the 5 km to the valley below. It was quite picturesque. After that , it was a short boat ride to an island, where we had lunch. As usual, there was a monastery on the island, but we gave it a miss.

Having done that, we hiked back up to the rim and had a cold beer and pop at the top. The kids marched along the entire way, with the exception of our three year old nephew, who fell asleep sitting on the guide's shoulders. He was pooped out.
